In Q1 2014, we all have noticed some huge different numbers for Windows Phone sales, comprising ABI Research that estimated more than 13 million handsets. Canalys, a UK research company, have now weighing in with their Q1 numbers and for Windows Phone they are not half as rosy.

Approximately, 279.4 million smart-phones have been shipped in Q1 2014 that shows the growth of 29% on Q1 2013, but a decline of 5 % on the seasonally strong Q4 2013. Among all the shipped devices 81% of devices were running on Android platform and 16%and 3% of devices were running on iOS and Windows Phone respectively.

These are the latest figures that come from Canalys, an independent analyst firm that noted more than a third of these devices that had 5-inch displays or larger. As we all know that China is the world’s biggest smart-phone markets that accounted for 35% of shipments, considerably ahead of the US that managed just 12%.

For the very first time, all the four countries, including India, Brazil, Russia and China appeared among the top 10 smart-phone markets as these countries are shimmering the shift in impetus toward the new growth markets that has been occurring over the last few years.

India was the third biggest market, accounting for a 5% of global shipments while Chine was the first. When it comes to Brazil and Russia, they were eighth and tenth place respectively. However combined, the BRIC countries saw shipments of 123.4 million units, equal to 44% of the global total.

According to Canalys Research Director for China Nicole Peng, “New growth and emerging markets represent a collective opportunity that now far outweighs mature markets. Q1 smart phone shipments represented 65% of the wider mobile phone market. Much of the potential for that number to increase is now focused on emerging markets.”

Moreover, the survey also explained much of the growth that was in the larger-screened handsets like above 5-inches. These days, smart-phones that are with 5 and larger screens grew 369% – a considerably huge rate of growth compare to overall market. Further, the survey also represented more than third of shipments (34%), and in Greater China the figure also hits 39% and 43% in Asia Pacific.

Canalys Analyst Jessica Kwee said, “This is still a market segment led by Samsung, but the trend is unmistakably toward larger-screen handsets at the high end of the market. It held a 44% share of devices with displays of 5″ and above, and 53% if the view is narrowed to look at 5.5″-plus displays.”

She also added “But many other vendors, such as Lenovo, Huawei, LG and Sony, have also achieved significant volumes in this space with products at the top end of their portfolios. Consumers now expect high-end devices to have large displays, and Apple’s absence in this market will clearly not last long. It is notable that 5″ and above displays featured on almost half (47%) of smart phones with an unlocked retail price of US$500 or more. Of the remaining 53% of high-end smart phones, 87% were iPhones. Apple plainly needs a larger-screen smart phone to remain competitive, and it will look to address this in the coming months.”
